Malaysia auto market growth 2026
Entities: Proton · Zhang Qiang · Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa · eMas · Malaysia
Overview
June 2026 saw Malaysia register 6,215 electric vehicles – an 89.9% rise on June 2025 and 23.4% above May 2026 – giving EVs an 8.52% share of the 72,943 total registrations, the second‑highest monthly EV share of the year. Proton’s e.MAS 5 reclaimed the lead with 1,309 units, followed by the e.MAS 7 (579 units), together supplying about 30 % of June’s EV sales. Tesla’s Model Y (526 units) and Model 3 (409 units) moved into third and fourth places, while BYD’s Atto 3 (371 units) and Zeekr 7X matched for fifth. Proton’s EV portfolio accounted for 13,530 registrations (43 % market share) and BYD contributed 5,675 units.
For the January‑June half‑year, total vehicle registrations reached 385,353, a 3 % increase on 2025. Domestic makers Proton and Perodua sold 256,304 units, lifting their combined market share to roughly 67 % from 63 % a year earlier, while foreign brands fell to about 33 % share. Production rose 1.2 % to 356,946 units, with passenger‑vehicle output up 1 % and commercial‑vehicle output up 11 % despite an 11 % sales decline. A 19 % jump in SUV demand was driven partly by new electric models from Proton.
In July 2026 Proton reported 118,788 units sold in the first seven months – a 38.7 % year‑on‑year gain – and delivered 18,442 vehicles in July alone. The eMas line sold 3,888 units that month, taking its year‑to‑date total to 21,808. The eMas 5 remains the top‑selling EV with 13,196 units YTD, the eMas 7 plug‑in hybrid reached 4,946 units, and the eMas 7 electric SUV logged 3,666 units. Proton also expanded its network to 58 sales outlets and 45 service centres.
