Province of Benevento Returns Historic Giannone High School after PNRR Renovation

After about two years of work, the Liceo Classico “Pietro Giannone” in Benevento, Italy, was officially reopened this morning. The building at Piazza Risorgimento was restored with structural consolidation and energy‑saving upgrades financed by roughly €2.3 million from the EU‑backed National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The handover ceremony was led by provincial president Nino Lombardi and school administrative director Maria Letizia Varricchio, representing headteacher Teresa De Vito, alongside engineers and the construction firm.

Classes were never interrupted because the province coordinated with the University of Sannio to temporarily house students and staff at the university’s Via Calandra campus while work continued. Renovations included seismic reinforcement, replacement of windows, doors, bathrooms, lighting, and other systems to improve safety and reduce energy consumption. The project is one of eleven PNRR‑funded works the province is delivering on schedule, restoring the historic school’s cultural and educational role in the community.
