Province of Siena implements prevention plan for African Swine Fever
The Province of Siena is implementing a preventive strategic plan to protect its agricultural and livestock sectors from African Swine Fever (ASF). Although the province is currently classified as a ‘white zone’—meaning there are no active outbreaks—local authorities are coordinating with regional officials to prepare for potential viral spread.
During an operational summit led by Provincial President Agnese Carletti, officials discussed a coordinated response involving municipalities, local health authorities (ASL), hunters, and regional technicians. The prevention plan includes the appointment of a dedicated coordinator and the provision of equipment for carcass recovery, veterinary assistance, and specialized training for operators.
A key component of the strategy involves managing the wild boar population, with over 10,000 animals culled annually in the territory. The initiative also aims to strengthen the wild game meat supply chain while maintaining high vigilance to prevent a sanitary emergency that could impact the local economy.
