Spanish political parties launch primary processes for 2027 elections

Spanish political parties have begun formalizing strategies and internal processes for the 2027 municipal and regional elections. The PSOE and its Valencian branch, PSPV-PSOE, are actively implementing primary calendars to select candidates for major cities. In the Valencian Community, the PSPV is prioritizing large municipalities like Valencia, Elche, and Castellón de la Plana, aiming to have 80% of its municipal candidacies defined by November. This process has faced internal friction in Benidorm, where tensions have risen over the party leadership's preference for a single candidate to avoid a primary vote.

In other regions, the PSOE in Andalusia and Madrid are also launching primary processes. In Andalusia, the party is opening candidacy presentations for provincial capitals and municipalities with over 20,000 inhabitants. In Madrid, the primary process for municipalities of similar size is scheduled to begin in September.

Nationally, the 2027 electoral cycle is viewed as a critical test for Pedro Sánchez's government. Political analysts note that the upcoming elections will serve as a barometer for the strength of the current administration against the opposition, particularly the Partido Popular and Vox, as parties seek to consolidate power ahead of future general elections.
