PSOE candidate selection and internal tensions

Overview

The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) has expanded its internal processes to select candidates for the 2027 municipal and regional elections. In the Valencian Community, the PSPV-PSOE is implementing a primary calendar focused on large municipalities, while in Madrid, the first phase of municipal primaries has concluded, with competitive races set for Boadilla del Monte, Colmenar Viejo, and Pinto.

In Andalusia, the party has faced significant instability following historic electoral losses, where it secured less than 23% of the vote and 28 seats. This has led to regional fatigue and growing friction regarding the leadership of Secretary General María Jesús Montero. Despite her directives to minimize primary elections to avoid disputes, some local leaders have disregarded these requests. In Jaén, Mayor Julio Millán has reinforced his position by securing a decisive victory with 70% of the vote, defeating challenger Carlos Alberca. In Linares, Javier Perales has won the primary against Ana Cobo Carmona. Additionally, Juan Latorre, the Secretary General of the PSOE in Jaén, has named Fran Lozano as the candidate for Mayor of Úbeda, citing recent local investments, such as over 20 million euros for storm damage and 45 million euros for the Civil Guard Academy, as a basis for continued management.

In Gijón, members are participating in in-person primary elections to choose between the current mayor, Ramón Tuero, and Vice-Counselor of Tourism Lara Martínez. In Badajoz, Silvia González emerged as the winner of the primaries with 63.9% of the vote. In Córdoba, the selection process moves to a second round of voting between José Antonio Romero and Ángel Ortiz, while Blanca Martín has been officially presented as the candidate in Plasencia.
