Ceuta President Vivas criticizes government response to migration crisis
Juan Jesús Vivas, the President of Ceuta, has issued a sharp critique of the Spanish central government's handling of the recent migration crisis in the autonomous city. During a televised interview, Vivas accused Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska of irresponsibility and indolence, claiming the administration failed to act on intelligence warnings and lacked a preparedness plan similar to the 2021 crisis.
Vivas characterized the influx of over 80,000 migrants as an invasion rather than a standard migration event, alleging that Morocco orchestrated the movement to exert pressure on Spain. He expressed a total lack of confidence in the national government's ability to defend Ceuta's territorial integrity.
In response, the PSOE has defended the government's actions, emphasizing the need for legal procedures and human rights protections for migrants. Party spokesperson Montse Mínguez accused the PP of using the crisis for political leverage and alleged that the Ceuta administration has engaged in questionable contracting, specifically citing two million-euro contracts awarded to individuals close to the local leadership.
