Psychiatrist warns of mental and physical risks from cyberbullying
Psychiatrist Yang Cong-cai has warned that long-term cyberbullying can cause severe psychological and physical harm. He noted that the brain processes feelings of humiliation and social rejection similarly to physical pain.
Continuous exposure to online attacks through social media—which is difficult to escape and operates 24/7—can lead to symptoms such as insomnia, loss of appetite, and social withdrawal. Physically, high stress levels can trigger autonomic nervous system dysfunction, resulting in headaches, palpitations, and weakened immunity. If left unaddressed, these stressors increase the risk of anxiety, depression, panic disorders, and PTSD.
Medical professionals recommend that victims stop reading malicious comments immediately and seek support from friends, family, or professionals. It is also advised to preserve evidence through screenshots or recordings for potential legal action.
