Psychologists Emphasize Mental Stability as Core to Happy Marriages

Russian psychologist and family therapist Mihail Labkovski argues that the single most important factor for a lasting, happy marriage is the mental stability of both partners. He stresses that stable individuals are better able to stay committed and love one another over the long term, and that couples should discuss problems openly rather than ignoring them.

The Gottman Institute identifies four communication habits that erode relationships: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. Recognizing and avoiding these patterns, while using clear, non‑judgmental language and taking constructive pauses, can help partners resolve conflicts and maintain a secure bond.
