PT Freeport Indonesia convoy targeted in Tembagapura shooting

A convoy belonging to PT Freeport Indonesia was targeted in a shooting on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in the Tembagapura District of Mimika, Central Papua. The incident occurred around 08:25 WIT at Mile Point 60 on the Mining Road as the 15-vehicle convoy was traveling from Mile Point 68 toward Timika City.

Three vehicles were struck by gunfire: two buses (numbers 140591 and 140575) and one towing truck (number 021074). One bus sustained five shots to the windshield, side windows, and doors, while another bus was hit once through the upper cabin. The towing truck received three shots to its door and side mirror. Investigators recovered three 5.56mm ammunition casings at the scene.

Police spokesperson for the Damai Cartenz Operation, Kombes Pol. Yusuf Sutejo, confirmed that despite the damage to the vehicles, there were no fatalities or injuries among the passengers and drivers.
