Overview

In August 2026, security forces from the Operasi Damai Cartenz 2026 and Satgas Amole 2026 task forces engaged a wanted suspect, identified as GW, in the Tembagapura District of Mimika, Central Papua. The shooting occurred as GW attempted to flee. The suspect was linked to several past criminal acts, including a 2017 vehicle attack and a 2020 shooting at the PT Freeport Indonesia office that killed a New Zealand citizen. Following the engagement, GW sustained injuries and was reportedly moved into a forested area by members of his group; security personnel continued searches in the vicinity.

On September 2, 2026, a 15-vehicle convoy belonging to PT Freeport Indonesia was targeted by gunfire at Mile Point 60 on the Mining Road in Tembagapura. Three vehicles, including two buses and a towing truck, were struck by shots. Investigators recovered three 5.56mm ammunition casings at the scene. Police confirmed that there were no fatalities or injuries among the passengers and drivers despite the damage to the vehicles.
