Hungary to review waste management system following MOHU complaints

The Hungarian government has announced a full review of the national waste management system following a surge in public complaints regarding MOHU, the company responsible for waste services since July 2023. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that MOHU has failed to meet its contractual obligations and targets.

Key issues driving the review include failures in waste collection services, such as missed selective and green waste pickups in certain counties, and significant problems with the deposit return scheme (DRS). The DRS has faced criticism for causing security and social issues in urban areas, leading to discussions about removing cash payouts. Additionally, MOHU has faced financial difficulties, reporting significant losses despite its scale.

As a result of the ongoing review, MOHU has temporarily suspended organized collection campaigns for household tires and electronic waste. During this transition, citizens are advised to use existing waste yards and recycling centers for these materials.
