Péter Magyar criticizes EU leadership and bureaucracy

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has criticized the European Union for a lack of political leadership and excessive bureaucracy. Speaking at the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, Magyar warned that the EU's administrative processes stifle innovation and initiative, noting that officials advised him not to engage with the system to avoid having new ideas “eaten” by the bureaucracy.

Magyar argued that the EU focuses too heavily on internal institutional matters while global powers like China strengthen their positions through investments in European nuclear energy and automotive industries. He emphasized that the Union must decide whether it intends to merely survive or to compete and win.

His remarks signal a potential shift in Hungarian foreign policy toward closer cooperation with the EU and NATO compared to the previous administration. Magyar has also engaged in high-level meetings with European leaders to secure frozen EU funds, totaling approximately 16.4 billion euros, and to discuss regional competitiveness and energy security.
