Péter Magyar initiates rapid reforms in Hungary 100 days into term

One hundred days into his term, Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has initiated a rapid and sweeping restructuring of the nation's state institutions, a process he has referred to as ‘Operation Fegefeuer’ (Operation Purgatory).

Utilizing a two-thirds parliamentary majority, Magyar has implemented constitutional changes to remove figures associated with the previous administration of Viktor Orbán. His reforms have targeted the judiciary, the presidency, and the media landscape. Notably, Magyar suspended news broadcasts on the state broadcaster M1 to facilitate the establishment of independent journalism and has ended previous subsidy systems for print media.

While these actions have led the European Union to authorize the release of frozen funds, Magyar’s methods have drawn criticism. Observers and organizations such as Amnesty International have noted that his approach to purging the previous administration’s influence involves autocratic-style tactics and rapid personnel shifts that mirror some of the centralized power dynamics he promised to dismantle.
