Péter Magyar outlines vision for Hungarian regime change
Péter Magyar, during his national campaign tour, has outlined his vision for a true regime change in Hungary. Speaking in Szolnok, Magyar stated that a change in government alone is insufficient for a complete systemic transformation. He argued that a real regime change requires the liberation of the state and its citizens, the restoration of the judiciary, and the pursuit of justice.
Magyar emphasized that true reform involves ensuring public officials work based on professional conviction rather than political influence. He also highlighted the need to hold those responsible for corruption and the misappropriation of public funds accountable. To this end, he discussed the planned National Asset Recovery and Protection Office, which he envisions as a body tasked not only with recovering stolen assets but also with protecting public property.
Political scientist Ivan Krastev has also commented on the nature of the campaign, drawing comparisons between Magyar’s ability to energize large crowds and the populist style of Donald Trump. Krastev noted that while Magyar’s movement challenges the existing political elite and seeks to mobilize voters directly, it represents a different facet of populism that is not necessarily authoritarian or exclusionary.
