Péter Magyar pledges legislative action to recover Hungarian state assets

Hungarian political leader Péter Magyar has announced intentions to introduce legislative amendments aimed at accelerating investigations and criminal proceedings related to the recovery of state assets. He emphasized that while the government is committed to punishing those responsible and reclaiming property, it must operate within the framework of the rule of law.

Magyar addressed criticisms regarding the National Asset Recovery and Asset Protection Agency, stating that the government will not tolerate attempts to undermine the institution's credibility. He further noted that government decisions are made based on long-term service and oaths to the country rather than immediate popularity.

Legal experts have highlighted significant challenges in these efforts. Miklós Ligeti noted that globally, only about ten percent of stolen or offshore assets are successfully returned to state treasuries. Expert Tamás Lattmann warned that the statute of limitations poses a major hurdle, noting that in the Hungarian legal system, certain documents must be preserved within a five-year window, after which authorities may become legally unable to act. However, experts suggest that initiating official investigations is crucial as it interrupts the statute of limitations period.
