Hungary's Péter Magyar rejects military aid to Ukraine while seeking improved ties with Kyiv

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar has reaffirmed that Hungary will not provide military aid to Ukraine or permit the transit of weapons through its territory. Despite this stance, Magyar expressed a desire to rebuild trust with Kyiv through incremental steps and announced a potential meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Brussels as early as next week.

Relations between the two nations have seen a shift following the passage of a new law by the Ukrainian Parliament aimed at strengthening minority rights, particularly for the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia. This legislative move is seen as a key step in easing long-standing tensions and facilitating Ukraine’s EU accession process.

Domestically, Magyar outlined a major political agenda, including a complete rewrite of the Hungarian Constitution, a process expected to last at least a year and conclude with a national referendum. He also highlighted the government's success in reaching a political agreement with the European Union to access EU funds and emphasized efforts to reduce Hungary's energy dependence on Russia.
