Hungary's Péter Magyar Wins Election, Overthrows Viktor Orbán

Péter Magyar secured a decisive victory in Hungary’s April 2026 parliamentary election, ending Viktor Orbán’s long‑standing premiership. Magyar’s platform combined “humane nationalism” with promises to improve transport, health and education, and to reconcile national symbols with European integration. At the inauguration the parliament featured the EU anthem, the traditional Hungarian anthem, the Szekler anthem and a Roma folk song, signalling an inclusive approach to national identity.

Following the election, the parliamentary speaker assumed interim presidential duties while lawmakers have 30 days to elect a new head of state. Prime Minister Magyar publicly suggested former chess champion Judit Polgár as a possible interim president, sparking debate over a constitution‑drafting process and a future direct‑vote system for the presidency.
