Imran Khan supporters launch long march to Islamabad

Supporters of jailed former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan have launched a long march from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa toward Islamabad following the collapse of negotiations between the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the federal government. The march, led by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, began in the Lakki Marwat district with thousands of demonstrators traveling in convoys of buses and trucks.

PTI is demanding the immediate release of Imran Khan, access for him to be examined by private doctors, and the release of his three sisters. The party also claims that approximately 2,000 of its workers have been arrested during the unrest.

In response to the looming protest, authorities in Islamabad have imposed Section 144 and utilized shipping containers to block access to the capital's government district and major highways. The federal government has urged a postponement of the march, citing a rise in militant attacks in the northwest, while Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi warned that Chief Minister Afridi would be held responsible for any loss of life. Meanwhile, the federal government is reportedly considering the option of imposing emergency or governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
