Public health alerts issued for measles in Mozambique and spotted fever in Brazil

Health authorities in Brazil and Mozambique are reporting significant disease activity. In Campinas, Brazil, a 29-year-old man has died, marking the second fatality from Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the city in 2026. The infection is believed to have occurred at a fishing site in a neighboring municipality. Health officials noted that the region is endemic for the disease, which is transmitted by star ticks, and warned that the risk period typically lasts until November.

In Mozambique, a measles outbreak has escalated, with 2,595 reported cases and four deaths since the outbreak was declared in July 2025. Data from the National Directorate of Public Health shows that Nampula province is the most affected area, followed by Sofala and Zambézia. The outbreak follows a large-scale vaccination campaign conducted in 2023, and authorities are urging those with symptoms such as fever and rash to seek immediate medical attention.
