Public health initiatives target rising HIV and STI risks
Health authorities in different regions are intensifying efforts to combat the spread of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) through education and prevention campaigns.
In the San Román Health Network, officials reported 33 cases of HIV and 63 cases of adolescent pregnancy during 2025. Health coordinator Vilma Canahuire Callata noted an increase in risky behaviors among youth and highlighted the dangers of misinformation on social media. The network is conducting interventions in higher education institutions alongside the Family Prosecutor's Office to promote sexual and reproductive rights and the use of contraceptives.
In the Magallanes region, the “Cero Tapujos, Cero Riesgos” (Zero Obstacles, Zero Risks) project is working to strengthen sexual education. The initiative includes information stands, the distribution of prevention kits, and interventions in public and nightlife spaces in Punta Arenas. The campaign focuses on debunking myths, promoting rapid testing, and emphasizing that individuals with an undetectable viral load through treatment cannot transmit the virus.
