Kenya youth health and safety initiatives
Overview
The Kenyan government has launched initiatives to address a ‘triple threat’ facing the nation’s youth: new HIV infections, adolescent pregnancies, and sexual and gender-based violence.
During an advocacy event in Homa Bay County, Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga noted that these interconnected issues jeopardize the health, education, and safety of adolescents, who comprise roughly 24 percent of the population. To combat these risks, the government is utilizing Community Health Promoters to connect vulnerable youth to HIV testing, reproductive health services, and maternal care. Additionally, the Social Health Authority is working to reduce financial barriers to essential maternal health services for pregnant adolescents.
