Greece prepares for the 2026-2027 academic year

Greece is preparing for the 2026-2027 academic year, with several key administrative processes underway. Primary and secondary schools are scheduled to reopen on September 11, 2026, beginning with religious services (agiasmos) and student orientations, followed by the start of regular lessons on September 14.

Parallel to school openings, the Ministry of Education has opened electronic applications for Higher Vocational Training Schools (SAEK). Applications for most specialties are accepted from September 1 to September 11, 2026, via the official ministry platform. Specialized registration periods apply for students with disabilities and specific regional schools in areas like Chania, Naxos, and Drama.

Teacher recruitment is also a major focus, with the ministry processing the first phase of approximately 30,000 substitute teacher appointments. Additionally, the Ministry is hosting a national dialogue regarding the implementation of the 'New Lyceum' and the 'National Baccalaureate' to address future educational needs, including the integration of Artificial Intelligence.

For vocational students, the DYPA apprenticeship programs are active, offering paid and insured training in 41 specialties, with application deadlines set for early September. Primary schools implementing the upgraded all-day program will also follow new dismissal schedules based on specific instructional zones.
