Greek education and vocational program expansion 2026-27

Overview

As the 2026-27 academic year begins, Greece is finalizing preparations for school reopenings and vocational training enrollments. Primary and secondary schools are scheduled to reopen on 11 September 2026, with the first day dedicated to religious ceremonies, student orientation, and book distribution, followed by regular classes on 14 September. To support the term, the Ministry of Education has initiated the recruitment of approximately 30,000 substitute teachers. Educational reforms remain a focus, including the implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and a national dialogue regarding the New Lyceum, the National Baccalaureate, and Artificial Intelligence integration.

Vocational training is seeing significant expansion. The Greek Public Employment Service (DYPA) is conducting registration for 30 Higher Vocational Training Schools (SAEK), offering 46 specialties. Additionally, the Post-Secondary Year Apprenticeship Program has grown, with available positions increasing by 12% to 15,762, largely driven by the private sector (72.4%).

To bridge labor market gaps, DYPA is expanding its Vocational Apprenticeship School (EPAS) network to 50 schools. Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Niki Kerameus stated the goal is to “create more opportunities and improve the match between labor supply and demand” by adapting curricula to specific industry needs.

In late September, DYPA opened a new application period for EPAS and specialized programs for the 2026-2027 year. Eligible applicants are youths aged 15 to 29 with at least a middle school diploma; applications must be submitted via gov.gr by 29 September 2026. Weekly stipends are set at 130 euros for four days of apprenticeship or 163 euros for five days. Furthermore, the deadline for seven Experimental Vocational Schools (PEPAS) in the tourism and hospitality sectors has been extended to 18 October.
