Public sector hiring and fund management scandals reported in Chile and Peru

In Chile, the Regional Comptroller of Valparaíso has ordered disciplinary proceedings against the Valparaíso Local Public Education Service (SLEPV) following the discovery of significant administrative irregularities between January 2024 and May 2025. Findings include improper hiring without competitive processes, unjustified service commissions, and the misuse of Preferential School Subsidies (SEP) without sufficient accreditation. Notably, a delay in administrative procedures allowed a former executive director to continue receiving liquid payments totaling 247,557,391 pesos while suspended.

In Peru, the Fuerza Popular parliamentary group is facing scrutiny regarding the hiring of staff for public positions. Investigations have highlighted several controversial appointments, including the son of the Minister of Justice and Human Rights as an advisor, an individual linked to the flight of former magistrate César Hinostroza, and a person with a conviction for domestic violence. Other concerns involve employees with criminal or police records and staff lacking verified academic degrees.
