New Zealand public servants to strike over pay disputes

Nearly 10,000 public servants in New Zealand are scheduled to strike on September 9 following failed negotiations over pay and working conditions. The industrial action, organized by the Public Service Association (PSA), will affect several agencies, including the Department of Internal Affairs, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Ministry for Ethnic Communities, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, and the Ministry of Social Development.

Union representatives state that current pay offers remain well below inflation, particularly following recent government spending cuts and workforce reductions. PSA National Secretary Duane Leo noted that tension has reached a breaking point as workers feel undervalued and overworked.

Government officials have criticized the move. Public Service Minister Paul Goldsmith characterized the strike as a “broader political campaign” intended to influence the upcoming national election. Prime Minister Christopher Luxon expressed a preference for workers to be “actually working” or engaged in negotiations rather than participating in industrial action.
