New Zealand public service pay disputes

Nearly 10,000 public servants in New Zealand, represented by the Public Service Association (PSA), have scheduled industrial action for September 9 following failed negotiations regarding pay and working conditions. Workers are seeking wage increases to address the rising cost of living and recent government spending cuts.

The strike will impact several government agencies, including the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Ministry for Ethnic Communities (MEC). Specific strike windows have been established, with MSD workers striking for two hours, MBIE workers for four and a half hours, and staff from DIA, NEMA, and MEC striking for five hours.

Government officials have responded critically to the planned action. Public Service Minister Paul Goldsmith described the strike as a “broader political campaign” aimed at the upcoming national election, while Prime Minister Christopher Luxon stated a preference for workers to be “actually working” rather than participating in industrial action.

On September 7, nationwide industrial action commenced as workers rejected previous pay offers. The PSA noted that employees are seeking increases to prevent wages from effectively decreasing due to inflation. The walkout included over 5,000 staff from MSD and approximately 2,700 workers from MBIE, including immigration and visa officers. Rallies were held in Wellington and Auckland, where demonstrators expressed concerns regarding austerity measures and the impact of service cuts on public welfare and national heritage.
