Public transport disruptions and bus changes in Meppel and Zwolle
Public transport services in the Netherlands are undergoing significant changes due to infrastructure maintenance and schedule adjustments. Starting August 14, ProRail will conduct track work between Zwolle and Meppel, resulting in the suspension of train services between these stations through Sunday. NS is deploying replacement buses, which passengers can use with standard NS tickets. Because this line is the primary connection from Zwolle to northern Netherlands, travelers heading toward Groningen and Leeuwarden will also experience delays. The work involves replacing track ballast, sleepers, and rails, as well as renewing copper cables to prevent theft and malfunctions. Further disruptions are expected in early September.
In conjunction with these changes, night bus services in the Meppel and Groningen regions are being adjusted. From August 15, night bus frequencies from Groningen to Assen, Roden, and Leek will increase to twice per hour. Line 422, running between Assen and Meppel via Beilen and Hoogeveen, will return on August 20 to align with the final Sprinter service from Groningen. Additionally, line 428 will see route extensions toward Smilde and Assen, while line 434 will resume two Saturday night trips from Meppel Prinsenplein.
