Public transport fare increases spark unrest in Peru and Venezuela
Public transportation users in Venezuela and Peru are facing increased costs due to recent fare hikes. In Cumaná, Venezuela, the urban fare has risen to 190 bolívares, causing concern among residents with limited incomes who report having to reduce spending on essential goods like food to afford travel.
In Tacna, Peru, transport operators have increased the urban fare to S/ 1.50. Many passengers are responding by paying exactly S/ 1.00 to avoid issues with change, though disputes occur when larger denominations are used. There have been allegations of price collusion and pressure from transport leaders on drivers to implement the new rates, even as fuel prices from providers like Petroperú and Repsol have reportedly decreased.
Tacna Regional Governor Luis Torres Robledo has shifted his stance on the issue. While he previously supported a transport strike aimed at securing higher fares due to fuel costs, he has now stated he is “totally against the tarifazo” (fare hike) following public outcry from commuters.
