Public transport fare increases in South America
Overview
In Bolivia, transport unions in La Paz and Potosí have signaled intentions to raise public transport fares. In La Paz, the Confederación de Choferes de La Paz reported that rising costs for food, fuel, and other inputs have made current rates unsustainable, stating, “Todo se ha incrementado… no podemos seguir trabajando a pérdida.” In Potosí, drivers reported earnings dropping to 30% of normal capacity due to fuel shortages and rising costs for diesel and spare parts, with some drivers sleeping in vehicles to secure fuel.
The situation has expanded to include Venezuela and Peru, where fare increases have already been implemented. In Cumaná, Venezuela, urban fares rose to 190 bolívares, forcing residents to reduce spending on food. In Tacna, Peru, operators increased urban fares to S/ 1.50, leading to disputes between passengers and drivers. While regional authorities in Tacna previously supported strikes to secure higher fares, the Governor has since expressed opposition to the hike, calling it a “tarifazo” following public outcry.
