Public transport tariffs face changes in Germany and Switzerland

Consumer protection groups in Germany are calling for a simplified nationwide public transport tariff system to replace the current complex web of zones and ticket types. Ramona Pop, head of the Federal Association of Consumer Centers, proposed a time-based model consisting of only five ticket types: 15, 30, 60, 120 minutes, and 24 hours. This initiative aims to provide an intuitive and uniform alternative for occasional travelers who do not use the Deutschlandticket.

In Berlin and Brandenburg, the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg (VBB) has announced price increases effective January 1, 2027. While the standard Berlin AB single ticket will remain at 4 euros, other fares including short-distance trips, Berlin ABC tickets, and 24-hour passes will rise, with an average increase of 3.72 percent.

In Switzerland, the Zurich Transport Network (ZVV) has approved a tariff adjustment for December 2026. Prices are expected to rise by an average of 2.7 percent due to increasing maintenance and operational costs. This change includes the removal of multi-trip ticket discounts to align with national tariff standards.
