Maule region faces agricultural emergency request after severe storms
Authorities in the Maule region of Chile are calling for a formal declaration of agricultural emergency following severe storms, heavy rains, and hail that have devastated local farming operations. The weather events caused significant damage to greenhouses and destroyed crops, particularly tomato and vegetable plantations in the Colín sector.
Regional Governor Pedro Pablo Álvarez-Salamanca, after inspecting the affected areas, emphasized that a decree is essential to unlock resources for farmers. The destruction of infrastructure, including the loss of nylon, poles, and wire, has left producers unable to immediately resume cultivation. Deputy Jorge Guzmán has also joined the call for government intervention, noting that the situation is particularly dire for small and medium-sized farmers who lack the capital to rebuild their facilities and recover from the loss of seasonal harvests.
