Agricultural emergencies in South America

Overview

Severe weather events have prompted calls for and declarations of agricultural emergencies in different parts of South America.

In the Maule region of Chile, authorities requested a formal declaration of agricultural emergency following storms, heavy rains, and hail. These weather events caused significant damage to greenhouses and destroyed crops, specifically tomato and vegetable plantations in the Colín sector. Regional Governor Pedro Pablo Álvarez-Salamanca noted that a decree is necessary to unlock resources for farmers facing infrastructure losses.

In the Salta province of Argentina, the government declared a state of agricultural emergency and disaster in the Calchaquí Valleys due to frost damage. The decree, covering the period from September 2026 to March 2028, affects viticulture and fruit and vegetable producers in the departments of Cafayate, San Carlos, Molinos, and Cachi. Producers with losses exceeding 50% are eligible for benefits under provincial law.
