Puebla Congress pauses gender parity reform for 2030 governorship
The Congress of Puebla has paused a legislative reform project that sought to mandate a female candidate for the state governorship in the 2030 elections. This decision follows recent rulings by the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), which declared similar laws in San Luis Potosí and Durango unconstitutional, citing that forced gender alternation in state executive powers violates constitutional principles.
Pável Gaspar Ramírez, president of the Government and Political Coordination Board, stated that the Morena-led proposal will be removed from the current discussion agenda to avoid further judicial setbacks. While he criticized the Supreme Court for limiting the sovereignty of local legislatures to legislate on parity, he noted that legal teams may restructure the project in the future with a technical framework designed to withstand constitutional scrutiny.
Separately, Puebla Mayor José Chedraui Budib expressed his view that attempting to advance gender alternation for the governorship is unconstitutional, though he noted the need for further legal analysis. Chedraui also addressed the ongoing construction of the Cablebús system, defending the project by stating that public consultations have shown significant support among citizens.
