Puebla Governor Recognizes 111 Forest Brigades, Extends 1,600 km Firebreaks
Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier of Puebla honored 111 forest‑fire brigades and Guard members, awarding 98 recognitions to fire‑fighting brigadistas, 13 to Guard personnel and acknowledging 19 rescued firefighters. The state announced it will keep equipping the brigades annually.
Puebla’s fire‑prevention program reported a 35 % drop in forest‑fire incidents and a 57 % reduction in the area burned during the 2026 season. Detection time for fires fell to 29 minutes thanks to a surveillance network of 29 cameras covering 80 % of the state, supplemented by satellite monitoring, 10 radio repeaters, 12 specialized vehicles and a helicopter with a 350‑liter bucket. Over 22 million pesos were invested in this equipment.
The Secretariat of Infrastructure cleared 1,603 km of firebreaks across 14 municipalities, deploying machinery from nine strategic modules in Chignahuapan, Teziutlán, Libres, Puebla, San Martín Texmelucan, Tepeaca, Tochimilco, Izúcar de Matamoros and Acatlán. The operation benefitted numerous rural communities and forest reserves, aiming to curb the spread of future wildfires.
