Mexico faces tensions over press freedom and security coordination

In Mexico, political tensions are rising regarding press freedom and security. In Puebla, the administration of Governor Alejandro Armenta faces accusations of censorship and lack of transparency. Critics and opposition members claim the government has targeted TV Azteca and other media outlets for reporting on insecurity and public spending. Concerns have been raised regarding the safety of journalists following the murder of Josué Martínez and other instances of harassment.

Simultaneously, federal officials are addressing security and digital disinformation. Morena deputy Arturo Ávila Anaya highlighted improved security coordination between Mexico and the United States, noting a reduction in fentanyl seizures and homicides. However, Ávila Anaya also denounced a massive network of over 500,000 automated social media accounts, allegedly linked to Spanish consultants, used to spread narratives against the federal administration.

Additionally, the federal government has presented analyses of digital ecosystems to combat coordinated disinformation campaigns involving various political actors and bots.
