Puebla authorities launch security operations amid rising transit robberies

Authorities in Puebla and surrounding regions are responding to a surge in violent robberies targeting transport and cargo. In the Puebla metropolitan area, the Secretaría de Movilidad y Transporte (SMT) has launched the ‘Transporte Seguro’ operation. This initiative involves random inspections and increased police presence on high-risk transit routes, such as the RUTA system and various conventional lines, following incidents like a shooting on Ruta 27 that injured three passengers.

On the Puebla-Veracruz highway, an attempted robbery of a Freightliner tractor-trailer resulted in a police pursuit and a shootout. While the driver escaped unharmed, two workers from a construction company were wounded by gunfire during the confrontation. Two suspects were subsequently detained by state police.

Other recent incidents include an attempted robbery at the Puebla Cathedral, where a couple was detained after allegedly threatening tourists, and an armed assault on the México-Puebla highway near Chalco, where thieves attempted to steal a cargo vehicle before being deterred by an onboard security camera.
