Puebla reforms public transport concessions to eliminate political influence
The government of Puebla is implementing a new model for public transportation concessions to eliminate discretion and political influence. Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier stated that new concessions are now granted through technical diagnostics, public calls, and collegiate reviews involving universities and business organizations, rather than through intermediaries or political recommendations.
To prioritize service renewal over revenue, the administration reported renouncing 150 million pesos in formal income. According to Silvia Tanús Osorio, Secretary of Mobility and Transport, the state has already replaced 6,936 units, with 84 percent of those being newer models from 2023 to 2027. Out of a total vehicle registry of 22,749 units, 20,411 have been replaced.
Regarding new concessions, 88 applications have been received through five calls for proposals; 17 have been evaluated and approved, while 16 remain under review.
