Mexican coastal towns boost marine turtle conservation efforts

The municipal administration of Puerto Morelos, led by President Blanca Merari Tziu Muñoz, conducted a night patrol at Punta Brava to monitor the arrival of marine turtles and protect nesting sites. Officials reported 860 recorded nests on the municipality’s beaches, with species such as the white, loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles observed.

In the neighboring municipality of Benito Juárez, officials reaffirmed their commitment to the same cause. The local ecology department, headed by Landy Guadalupe Canché Pantoja, oversees a protection program that currently safeguards 5,213 turtle nests and more than 607,000 eggs across 48 protective corrals along a 12‑km stretch of shoreline. Both municipalities stress the importance of citizen participation, ongoing monitoring, and coordination with environmental specialists to ensure successful hatching and the long‑term preservation of these species.
