Puerto Plata Cable Car begins major modernization project

The Puerto Plata Cable Car in the Dominican Republic has begun a comprehensive modernization project aimed at tripling its operational capacity. Led by Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza, the initiative seeks to upgrade the infrastructure after more than five decades of service.

The project is being executed by the Unidad para la Readecuación de Barrios y Entornos (URBE) in partnership with the DOMA Consortium, which includes the Austrian company Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and the Dominican construction firm Grupo Malespín. The upgrade will replace the current system with a modern monocable detachable gondola (ATW) system, featuring two new panoramic cabins capable of carrying 55 passengers each.

Beyond new cabins, the renovation includes the replacement of cable systems, drives, controls, safety mechanisms, electrical infrastructure, and passenger stations. The project aims to enhance safety, comfort, and accessibility for visitors traveling to the summit of Loma Isabel de Torres, ultimately supporting local economic growth in the northern region.
