Puerto Plata Cable Car modernization project

Overview

The Dominican government has launched a major modernization project for the Puerto Plata Cable Car to upgrade infrastructure that has been in service for over five decades. The project aims to triple operational capacity and enhance safety, comfort, and accessibility for visitors traveling to Loma Isabel de Torres.

Executed by the Unidad para la Readecuación de Barrios y Entornos (URBE) in partnership with the DOMA Consortium—comprising the Austrian company Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and the Dominican firm Grupo Malespín—the renovation involves replacing the existing system with modern technology. Key upgrades include the installation of two new panoramic cabins, each capable of carrying 55 passengers, and the replacement of cables, drive systems, controls, electrical infrastructure, and stations. The project is intended to support local economic growth in the northern region.
