Puerto Plata Cable Car modernization project begins in Dominican Republic

The Dominican government has officially launched a comprehensive modernization project for the Puerto Plata Cable Car, a major tourist attraction that has been out of operation since June 2024. The project, which involves an investment exceeding US$20 million, aims to replace the aging system with a modern bicable reversible (ATW) technology.

The renovation is being executed by the Unit for the Readaptation of Neighborhoods and Environments (URBE) in partnership with the DOMA Consortium, which includes the Austrian company Doppelmayr Seilbahnen GmbH and the Dominican firm Grupo Malespín. Key upgrades include the installation of two new panoramic cabins capable of carrying 55 passengers each—nearly triple the previous capacity of 18 to 20 people. The new system is expected to transport up to 430 passengers per hour in each direction and reduce travel time to Loma Isabel de Torres from eight minutes to approximately five minutes.

Beyond the cabins, the work covers the entire technical infrastructure, including cables, drive systems, control and monitoring mechanisms, electrical systems, and stations. The project also emphasizes universal accessibility and international safety standards. The modernized cable car is scheduled to enter operation during the first quarter of 2028.
