Puerto Rico expands water emergency to Loíza, Canóvanas, Río Grande

The Puerto Rico government will amend its water‑emergency executive order to add the municipalities of Loíza, Canóvanas and Río Grande. Public Affairs Secretary Jean Peña Payano said drought and water‑rationing protocols have been kept active since June 24 for these areas, which rely on fluctuating river supplies. Monitoring has prevented the need for scheduled rationing so far, and municipal leaders have been kept informed, with the latest notice given on Sunday.

The amendment coincides with planned maintenance by the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA). The agency is using scheduled power outages by LUMA Energy to upgrade the Sergio Cuevas filtration plant and facilities at Carraízo and Finca Rosso 1 and 2 in Bayamón. These projects, announced on July 2, are expected to finish by Tuesday‑Wednesday and are part of a broader investment that should benefit roughly 820,000 families in the metropolitan region.
