Puerto Rico Governor Orders Probe into Water Plant Contamination

Governor Jenniffer Aydin González Colón ordered a thorough investigation of the material detected in the water at the Canóvanas Filtration Plant, including the possibility of sabotage. The plant remains without final authorization to resume operations as the Department of Health has conditioned its endorsement on additional cleaning of the filters.

AAA chief executive Luis González Delgado confirmed that the Department of Natural Resources and Environment is continuing its inquiry into the source of the material. González Colón linked the incident to decades of under‑investment in the water system, noting that $7 billion has been allocated to the authority, with $3.4 billion earmarked for projects this year. She pledged to strengthen security protocols and, if criminal activity is confirmed, refer the findings to the appropriate authorities.
