Puerto Rico investigates suspected avian influenza in Cabo Rojo and Lajas

The Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture is investigating the deaths of multiple birds in Cabo Rojo and Lajas due to suspected highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). While laboratory results are still pending to confirm the presence of the virus, authorities have implemented preventive measures.

In Cabo Rojo, approximately 20 ducks died out of a population of 35. Following a veterinary visit on October 7, officials established a 120-day quarantine on the affected property and coordinated the proper disposal of the deceased birds.

A second investigation is underway in Lajas, where several species were affected, including approximately 30 Guinea fowl. The Department of Agriculture is working in coordination with the USDA-APHIS Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service to monitor the situation and protect the island's poultry industry.
