Puerto Rico Power Outages Planned by LUMA Energy Amid Generation Repairs

LUMA Energy announced scheduled maintenance that will cause temporary electricity interruptions across 23 municipalities in Puerto Rico from July 27 to August 2, 2026. The work includes removal of hazardous vegetation, replacement and repair of power lines and equipment, installation of automated devices, substation modernization, and projects to improve pole resilience.

Genera PR reported that while repairs continue on generation units, overall generation capacity has remained sufficient for demand. Unit 6 remains out of service for capacitor testing, with an expected return of 160 MW later tonight. Unit 2 is operating at a reduced 280 MW due to a vacuum issue in its capacitor. Genera PR, which supplies about 60 % of the island’s electricity, said its operations and maintenance teams are monitoring the units and working to restore full capacity.
