Puerto Rico adjusts operations at six reservoirs amid worsening drought

Puerto Rico's government announced operational adjustments at six water reservoirs—Carraízo, La Plata, Cidra, Toa Vaca, Río Blanco and Fajardo—to conserve water as drought conditions lower reservoir levels. Secretary of State Rosachely Rivera Santana led a meeting with the Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (AAA), the National Weather Service and other agencies, emphasizing daily monitoring and coordinated response.

The AAA reported that the Carraízo and Cidra reservoirs remain under observation, while the Guzmán Arriba filtration plant serving Río Grande and Canóvanas operates under a scheduled interruption plan due to reduced flow. The measures aim to reduce extraction, preserve reserves and extend supply throughout the drought period. Meteorologists indicated a tropical wave and trough could bring rain early next week, potentially slowing the decline in reservoir levels.

Officials urged residents to use water prudently to avoid additional interruptions.
