Puerto Rico water authority suspends planned outages amid drought and maintenance

The Autoridad de Acueductos y Alcantarillados (AAA) announced a temporary halt to its scheduled water‑service interruptions for Río Grande and Canóvanas after recent rains increased river flows, but warned that the drought condition remains unchanged. At the same time, AAA confirmed a rationing plan for several communities due to insufficient precipitation at the Guzmán Arriba filter plant.

More than 180,000 customers across the metropolitan area and the island’s north and south regions will experience water outages or reduced pressure from July 7 through July 12. The disruptions are linked to a broad modernization and maintenance program that includes equipment replacement, sediment‑washer cleaning, pipe installations, and work at the Carraízo reservoir and the Sergio Cuevas filtration plant. AAA is coordinating the water work with LUMA Energy’s scheduled power shutdowns and will deploy water‑truck deliveries to mitigate the impact. Residents were urged to store water and use it responsibly while the agency monitors river levels and reservoir supplies.
