Puerto Vallarta officials seek federal review of floating LED advertising

The appearance of a large-scale floating LED advertising screen in Bahía de Banderas has sparked significant controversy in Puerto Vallarta. Operated by the recently established firm Oceanic Marketing, the vessel displays commercial messages and images while navigating near high-traffic tourist areas and marinas.

Local residents, the tourism sector, and municipal authorities have expressed strong opposition, labeling the initiative as visual pollution that threatens the natural landscape and the city’s iconic sunsets. Critics also raise concerns regarding potential impacts on maritime navigation and local ecosystems.

In response, Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González has requested intervention from federal authorities, including the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Port Captaincy, and Semarnat. The municipal government seeks a review of permits, safety certifications, and environmental protections, as the company maintains that its operations are legal within federal maritime waters where municipal regulatory powers are limited.
