Puerto Vallarta floating LED advertising controversy

Overview

The introduction of large-scale floating LED advertising screens in Bahía de Banderas by the firm Oceanic Marketing has triggered significant controversy in Puerto Vallarta. The company describes the displays as a method for brands to “dominate the horizon,” suggesting they can support tourism and environmental awareness.

However, local residents, tourists, and the tourism sector have voiced strong opposition, characterizing the screens as visual pollution that disrupts the natural landscape and the region’s iconic sunsets. Concerns have also been raised regarding maritime navigation safety and potential impacts on local ecosystems.

In response to the backlash, Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González and the municipal government have requested intervention from federal authorities, including the Secretariat of the Navy (Semar), the Port Captaincy, and Semarnat. The municipal government is seeking a review of permits, safety certifications, and environmental protections to determine if the company holds the necessary legal authorizations to operate in maritime spaces.
