Puglia allocates 2.7 million euros for marine ecosystem protection

The Puglia Region's Environment and Climate Department has allocated 2.7 million euros to fund six projects dedicated to the restoration and protection of marine ecosystems within Natura 2000 sites. The funding, sourced from the Puglia FESR-FSE+ 2021-2027 program, provides approximately 450,000 euros per project.

Beneficiaries include the Torre Guaceto Management Consortium, the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area Management Consortium, the Ugento Coastal Park, the Gargano National Park (managing the Tremiti Islands Marine Protected Area), the Manduria Municipality (for Torre Colimena), and the Municipality of San Pietro Vernotico.

The initiatives aim to mitigate the impact of human activity and climate change on critical seabed habitats, specifically Posidonia oceanica meadows and reefs. Key actions include installing deterrents to prevent illegal bottom trawling and implementing mooring systems and buoy fields to manage vessel anchoring. All equipment must be sea-friendly, utilizing natural and low-impact materials to protect marine biodiversity.
